Take a shower off children before jumping into cold water
The summer temperatures drive many people to the quarry lake or to the outdoor pool. On hot days there is hardly any better cooling than a quick dip in cold water. But you should definitely take a shower beforehand - this applies especially to children. Otherwise there are dangers to health.

Be sure to cool down before bathing
With the current summer temperatures there is nothing better than cooling off while bathing. However, health experts repeatedly point out that senior citizens in particular should cool off before taking a bath. Because older people with cardiovascular diseases are at greater risk of reacting with life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias when jumping into the cool water. But it can also be dangerous for children in cold bathing water.

Send children into the shower
Parents should always send their children in the shower before splashing in cool water. This is what the professional association of pediatricians (BVKJ) points out on its website "".

"Not only for hygienic reasons, adolescents should also take a shower before going into a pool, a lake or the sea, but also to cool off a little and prepare the body for the temperature difference," says Prof. Hans-Jürgen Nentwich from BVKJ.

If the little ones were previously exposed to heat, jumping into cold water could be life-threatening. Children with heart failure are particularly at risk.

You could quickly lose consciousness with extreme temperature changes. If it is hot outside, cardiac arrhythmias can occur even at water temperatures of around 25 degrees.

Affected people can hardly hold their breath
A so-called “immersion shock” threatens. The vessels narrow, the blood pressure rises and the muscles contract.

“Affected people gasp for air, start to hyperventilate and can hardly hold their breath, causing water to get into their lungs. Cardiac arrhythmias can be added, ”said the pediatrician.

A person can usually hold their breath for about 60 to 90 seconds, but in this state it only succeeds for a few seconds. (ad)
