The number of TBE cases has more than doubled
In Baden-Württemberg, almost twice as many people have contracted tick-borne infectious disease TBE (early summer meningoencephalitis) as in the same period last year. The entire region is a risk area. Experts recommend getting vaccinated.

Carrier of dangerous diseases
Experts repeatedly point out how important it is to protect yourself from ticks. The little bloodsuckers can finally transmit dangerous infectious diseases such as early summer meningoencephalitis (TBE) or Lyme disease. The former is particularly common in southern Germany, as a new map of the TBE risk areas shows. In Baden-Württemberg the number of TBE cases has more than doubled.

Prevention of infection
As the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Social Affairs reports, 32 diseases have been reported to the State Health Office in Stuttgart since the beginning of the year - compared to 14 in the same period of the previous year. People between the ages of 11 and 78 were affected.

“All of Baden-Württemberg is a TBE risk area. I advise all citizens who are often in the great outdoors and gardens close to nature to be vaccinated urgently, ”said Health Minister Manne Lucha.

"The well-tolerated vaccination is the most effective prevention against infection," said the Green politician.

Warm and humid climate increases tick activity
“Warm and humid climates increase tick activity. This also increases the risk that diseases such as TBE or Lyme disease can be transmitted to humans through a tick bite, ”explained Lucha.

According to doctors, around 90 percent of TBE sufferers become infected during leisure activities. The disease can be particularly severe in older people. Symptoms appear in about a third of those infected.

First, there are flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting and dizziness.

According to doctors, some patients also develop meningitis and cerebral inflammation with the risk of damage to the spinal cord. In extreme cases, the disease is fatal.

No drugs are available against TBE itself, only the symptoms can be treated.

TBE infections from raw milk
The Ministry points out that the sufferers did not acquire the infection in all cases via a tick bite. In seven cases there is suspicion that the TBE was transmitted through the consumption of raw goat milk.

Experts had reported months ago that TBE infections are also possible through raw milk.

According to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Social Affairs, goats, but also cows and sheep, which are bitten by an infected tick, can excrete the virus in the milk for several days.

According to the current state of knowledge, vaccination also protects against this transmission route. (ad)
