Reduce baby's eczema risk

According to the experts, breastfeeding women should eat sea fish twice a week to reduce their child's risk of atopic dermatitis. On the one hand, particularly fatty fish such as herring, mackerel, salmon or sardines should be served on the table.
“These contain a lot of omega-3 fatty acids, which have a preventive effect against allergic diseases, as studies have shown. This recommendation has now also been included in the official guidelines for allergy prevention, ”explained pediatrician Dr. Ulrich Fegeler from BVKJ.
Predatory fish loaded with mercury
However, the question often arises with fish whether it is rather healthy or poisonous. For example, since larger predatory fish are at the end of the food chain, they are often more contaminated with mercury. The food inspectors at Stiftung Warentest recently reported that the canned tuna they tested contained mercury and mineral oils.
"Too much mercury can damage the nervous system, especially in unborn babies," wrote the experts. Experts repeatedly recommend: Pregnant women should not eat tuna. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) also advises pregnant and lactating women "to limit the consumption of tuna as a precaution".
Support the child's iodine supply
According to the BVKJ website, the mother's fish consumption can also support iodine in the breastfed baby through milk. Even a slight undersupply of iodine can have a negative impact on the child's development.
Even pregnant women should avoid iodine deficiency. “To ensure an adequate iodine supply, women should use iodized salt and take iodine tablets (100 micrograms per day) while breastfeeding. However, if thyroid problems are known, prior medical advice is essential, ”says Dr. Fegeler.
Avoid algae and seaweed products
According to the experts, it makes sense to avoid dried algae and seaweed products, which can contain very high doses of iodine, so as not to accidentally take too much iodine and, under certain circumstances, cause an overactive thyroid.
