Obesity is often associated with chronic inflammation
A team of scientists led by Krasimira Aleksandrova and Fabian Eichelmann from the German Institute for Nutritional Research (DIfE) evaluated 29 scientific papers that examined the effects of a plant-based diet on the levels of inflammation markers in overweight people. Important to know: "Obesity is often associated with chronic inflammation, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and cancer," the institute wrote in a message.
Overweight people can reduce the risk of illness through plant-based foods
As the meta-analysis published in the journal "Obesity Reviews" shows, compared to a control diet, the values of the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) decreased by an average of 0.55 mg / l and the values for interleukin 6 around 0.25 ng / l.
"Our results thus indicate that overweight people can significantly improve their inflammation marker profile through a plant-based diet and may thus be able to do a lot themselves to prevent so-called common ailments such as heart attack and diabetes," explained study leader Aleksandrova.
“A plant-based diet is defined so that it is mainly based on foods such as vegetables, cereals, legumes and fruits. It also contains no or very little meat, but can include moderate amounts of eggs, dairy products and fish, ”says lead author Eichelmann.
The number of obese people is increasing

Derive recommendations from investigation
Observation and intervention studies have already indicated in the past that a plant-based diet counteracts overweight-related inflammatory reactions. However, the observed effects were sometimes only weak.
"That is why we carried out an extensive, systematic literature analysis and for the first time combined the individual results of corresponding intervention studies into an overall result. This makes it easier to assess the effect size of such a diet on the development of chronic inflammation. An important prerequisite for deriving recommendations, ”Eichelmann explained.
In the current analysis, all relevant nutritional studies were examined that appeared in Medline, EMBASE and the Cochrane central register of Controlled Trials from January 1946 to January 2016. Of the 2,583 studies originally identified, only 29 publications, with data from a total of 2,689 study participants between the ages of 28 and 68, met the selection criteria for the meta-analysis.
