Sugar-free sweets and chewing gums: counteract dry mouth
When the mouth is dry and the tongue sticks to the palate, it not only feels uncomfortable, it can also damage health in the long term. Among other things, there is a risk of dental problems. With simple aids you can counteract dry mouth.

Dry mouth makes chewing and swallowing difficult
A dry mouth is really uncomfortable. Too little spittle makes chewing, swallowing and speaking difficult and, in the long term, dry mouth can lead to dental problems. If you have a dry mouth at all times, you should take countermeasures if possible. The flow of saliva can be stimulated, for example, with sugar-free sweets or chewing gum, as the German Green Cross (DGK) advises in a current report. A study by British scientists published a few months ago also shows that this is beneficial for oral hygiene. Accordingly, sugar-free chewing gums protect against tooth decay.

Make sure you have sufficient fluids
Of course, you should also make sure you drink enough. Water, unsweetened fruit or herbal teas or highly diluted juice spritzers are particularly recommended. However, the experts warn: "Patients with chronic diseases such as heart and kidney problems should first discuss with the doctor treating them how much liquid they can drink every day." Naturopathy also recommends chewing aromatic spices, such as fennel seeds, to stimulate the flow of saliva.

Dry mouth as a side effect of medication
Sleeping with your mouth open, existing underlying diseases, hormonal changes: Dry mouth can have many causes. “Sometimes it occurs when certain medicines have to be taken. The reason: A whole range of drugs can impair saliva formation, ”explain the DGK experts. These include, for example, some remedies for weakness in the bladder, antidepressants, sleeping pills and sedatives, strong pain relievers, antibiotics, or even heart and high blood pressure medications. The experts point out that those affected should not stop taking their medication on suspicion, but should instead discuss the complaint with their doctor. (ad)
