How does eating seafood affect pregnancy?
Our diet has a huge impact on the human body, so it is not really surprising that our libido and the likelihood of pregnancy are also affected. Researchers have now found that eating seafood is linked to increased sexual activity and increased chances of pregnancy.
In their current study, scientists from the internationally recognized Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health found that consuming seafood has a positive effect on our sex life and the likelihood of successful fertilization. The doctors published the results of their study in the English-language journal "Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism".
Data from 501 pairs were examined
The study evaluated a total of 501 couples who had tried to conceive. The participants were medically monitored over a period of one year. In particular, the daily consumption of seafood and sexual activity were observed.
Seafood increases sexual activity
The results of the study show that eating seafood can increase sexual activity and improve the likelihood of pregnancy. When couples ate seafood on a regular basis, this resulted in an increased frequency of intercourse of 22 percent. On days when both partners ate seafood, the likelihood of sexual activity was 39 percent higher, the study authors say.

At the end of the year, 92 percent of the study participants who consumed seafood more than twice a week had successfully started pregnancy, compared with 79 percent of those who did not eat such a diet.
What causes the increase in sexual activity?
While an increase in sexual activity could be a behavioral mechanism that links seafood intake to higher fertility, it's not the only mechanism, says study author Audrey Gaskins, nutritionist from Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. The scientists explain that regardless of sexual activity, the observed relationship between seafood and fertility can be enhanced by improving semen quality, menstrual cycle function (e.g. increasing ovulation and progesterone levels) and embryo quality when people eat lots of seafood and (omega-3 ) Eat fatty acids.
How much fish should adults eat?
Doctors generally advise adults to eat at least two servings of fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, and tuna per week. These foods are particularly rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are associated with a lower risk of heart disease and stroke.

Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant are currently instructed in their dietary guidelines not to eat more than three servings of fish a week to avoid exposure to mercury. At the start of the current study, researchers asked couples how often they had eaten tuna, crab, fish, and shellfish caught in local waters or unknown locations over the past 12 months. "Men who ate more seafood the year before the study were more likely to have sex than men who ate less seafood, but there was no significant difference in women," the doctors say. The researchers report that the probabilities of conception did not appear to have been influenced by the number of seafood eaten in the year before the study.
The scientists report that the subjects' seafood consumption did not appear to be influenced by factors such as income, education, exercise or body weight. However, it was unfortunately not clear which fish species people consumed, which could influence their risk of exposure to mercury, the authors further explain. (as)
