How does eating seafood affect pregnancy?

Our diet has a huge impact on the human body, so it is not really surprising that our libido and the likelihood of pregnancy are also affected. Researchers have now found that eating seafood is linked to increased sexual activity and increased chances of pregnancy.

In their current study, scientists from the internationally recognized Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health found that consuming seafood has a positive effect on our sex life and the likelihood of successful fertilization. The doctors published the results of their study in the English-language journal "Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism".

Data from 501 pairs were examined

The study evaluated a total of 501 couples who had tried to conceive. The participants were medically monitored over a period of one year. In particular, the daily consumption of seafood and sexual activity were observed.

Seafood increases sexual activity

The results of the study show that eating seafood can increase sexual activity and improve the likelihood of pregnancy. When couples ate seafood on a regular basis, this resulted in an increased frequency of intercourse of 22 percent. On days when both partners ate seafood, the likelihood of sexual activity was 39 percent higher, the study authors say.

At the end of the year, 92 percent of the study participants who consumed seafood more than twice a week had successfully started pregnancy, compared with 79 percent of those who did not eat such a diet.

While an increase in sexual activity could be a behavioral mechanism that links seafood intake to higher fertility, it's not the only mechanism, says study author Audrey Gaskins, nutritionist from Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. The scientists explain that regardless of sexual activity, the observed relationship between seafood and fertility can be enhanced by improving semen quality, menstrual cycle function (e.g. increasing ovulation and progesterone levels) and embryo quality when people eat lots of seafood and (omega-3 ) Eat fatty acids.
