Number of measles cases increased - Minister calls for vaccination

An increasing number of measles cases in Germany have been reported recently. In Bavaria, too, more and more people are contracting the disease, which can be protected by vaccination.

Significantly more measles cases than last year

Some people still dismiss measles as a harmless childhood disease. But the infectious disease also affects adults. So far, more people have contracted Bavaria this year than in the same period last year. This was pointed out by Bavaria's Minister of Health Melanie Huml. The minister called for vaccinations to protect herself against this dangerous disease.

Infectious disease

According to the information, a total of 18 measles cases were reported to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) by March 26. In 2017 there were 13 cases in this period and in 2016 only four cases.

Measles is highly contagious. The disease is transmitted via a droplet infection. It starts with flu-like symptoms such as high fever, cough and runny nose. The characteristic rash follows later.

In general, measles weakens the immune system. As a result, bronchitis, otitis media or pneumonia can occur.

“In addition, this highly contagious disease can take a very severe course with serious health consequences. In many cases, hospitalization is even necessary, ”warned Huml.

In rare cases, the infection can be fatal.

More and more young people and adults get sick

The disease is particularly dangerous in infants and young children.

According to the ministry, measles reports have had a high proportion of sick adolescents and adults in recent years.

“Apparent childhood illnesses like measles are increasingly occurring in adulthood,” says Huml, a trained doctor.

Vaccination protection also for adults

The minister called for vaccinations to protect herself against this disease. “Vaccination is the best protection against highly contagious diseases like measles. Those who are vaccinated protect themselves and others! Vaccine opponents should also consider this, ”said Huml.

In Germany measles vaccination is recommended for children from the eleventh month of life, for infants in a daycare center from the ninth month.

Adults should also check their measles vaccination protection if necessary.

"Only those who have been vaccinated against measles twice in childhood or once in adulthood have complete protection," explained Huml.

It is also important to know that "infectious relatives and caregivers" represent "a potential health hazard for newborns who have not yet been vaccinated," according to the Minister of Health.

Huml warned: "As long as there are vaccine gaps in the population, measles outbreaks can occur again and again." (Ad)
