When do you become obese?
The World Health Organization (WHO) uses the Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist size to classify obesity. Accordingly, a BMI of 30 and more is an indicator of obesity. In addition to the increased BMI, the waist circumference should be determined. If this is 88 centimeters or higher in women or 102 centimeters or higher in men, this is called a health-obesity (obesity). Possible complications are diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and many more.
Common causes of obesity
Obesity often arises when, over the long term, there is a higher intake of calories than is required by the body. Various factors favor this increased energy consumption. The biggest culprits in this regard are poor nutrition with too much sugar and fats (especially saturated fats) and a lack of exercise. But heredity also plays a role. Some people are naturally prone to fat formation faster than others. Stress can also promote the wrong diet, as can some illnesses such as diabetes and hypothyroidism or medication such as cortisone, antidepressants, beta-blockers and the contraceptive pill. (vb)
