Study: is there a veggie personality?

Is there a veggie personality? Feminine, liberal, political
"Tell me what you eat and I'll tell you who you are." Almost 200 years ago, the French writer and restaurateur Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin knew this. Apparently. Because does the type of diet actually indicate character traits and personality?

Scientists at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz have recently been investigating this question. In a two-part study, they attempted to investigate the personality traits of vegetarians and compare them with those of meat eaters.

In the first study from 2014, the definition of vegetarianism was strictly chosen, while in the second part from 2015, people were also included who occasionally ate meat and fish in addition to a plant-based diet. The evaluation was based on data from the long-term study Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin). More than 5,000 people were asked about their diet and personal attitudes.

According to the study results, vegetarians and vegans are primarily women, younger and better educated. Those who ate mostly vegetarian food often had a higher income than meat eaters. In addition, vegetarians and vegans should show specific personality traits. Compared to meat eaters, they are more liberal and open to new experiences, have a greater political interest and generally more trust in their fellow human beings.

According to their own statements, they should also be less conscientious, the psychologists explain in the journal "Appetite". However, the effects were very small, especially with the personality traits, the authors admit.

The study raises some questions. On the one hand, the classification in the nutritional styles is based only on the test persons' own information and not on an evaluation of the nutritional habits. On the other hand, it should not be forgotten that the eating behavior is very individual. This makes it difficult to classify people into different "personality drawers" simply because of their diet. Heike Kreutz, respectively
