Skipping breakfast increases your risk of heart disease
There are many myths surrounding the topic of nutrition. One of them is that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. There is no general answer to whether this is really the case, but apparently the food in the morning has an impact on our hearts. Spanish scientists found that people who eat very little or nothing in the morning have a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The study has now been published in the journal "Journal of the American College of Cardiology".
Breakfast: important or not?
Have breakfast extensively yes or no? Experts are far from unanimous on this question. Some are convinced that eating in the morning is necessary to give the body the energy it needs to get the day off to a good start. A breakfast increases the concentration and performance, according to the advocates. Others, on the other hand, claim that the positive effects of eating in the morning are far overestimated. Accordingly, breakfast is not the most important meal of the day.
Deposits hinder blood flow
A new study by the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III (CNIC) in Madrid has now shown that breakfast appears to play an important role in heart health. According to the CNIC, the Spanish researchers led by Dr. Irina Uzhova that the risk of atherosclerosis (often referred to as arteriosclerosis) increases twice if breakfast is missed or if you eat very little in the morning.
With atherosclerosis, fat and calcareous compounds (arteriosclerotic plaques) are deposited in the walls of medium-sized and large arteries, which obstruct and block blood flow. Therefore, the disease is also called hardening of the arteries. It is the most common underlying disease of the arterial vascular system and the main cause of coronary artery disease (CHD), which is the number one cause of death in Germany.
Only a fifth regularly eat a healthy breakfast
According to a CNIC statement, the researchers compared the lifestyle and eating habits of 4,000 middle-aged office workers and their tendency to atherosclerotic plaques. Accordingly, only 20% of the study participants regularly consumed an energetic breakfast with more than 20% of the recommended calorie intake.
The majority (70%) ate a low-energy breakfast (between 5% and 20% of the daily calorie intake). 3% ate little or nothing in the morning (<5% of daily calorie intake). The CNIC research team also found that the last group tended to have rather unhealthy eating habits and a higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, the report said.
Increased atherosclerosis values regardless of classic risk factors
It was found that people who had breakfast less than 5% of the recommended daily caloric intake (i.e. 100 calories with a daily total caloric intake of 2000) had on average twice as many arteriosclerotic lesions as those who had eaten an energetic breakfast. According to the scientists, this increased risk was independent of classic risk factors such as smoking, high cholesterol and physical inactivity.
Further investigation required
"The analysis suggests that skipping breakfast could be a real risk marker in the early stages of atherosclerotic disease, which requires further investigation into the underlying mechanism of action," said study author and nutrigenomics expert, Dr. José María Ordovás.
