Salmonella found: recall for spice blends at Aldi

Salmonella danger: organic spices recalled
Various organic spices were recalled from Aldi due to possible contamination with Salmonella. In view of the health risk that a Salmonella infection can entail, in particular for immunocompromised people, consumption is strongly discouraged. The affected products can be returned to the respective sales point against a refund of the purchase price.

The manufacturer Merschbrock-Wiese Gewürz GmbH has started a recall for various organic spices, as these may be contaminated with Salmonella. The spice blends were sold both at Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. Consumption is strongly discouraged. Anyone who has already used the spice mixture and is experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and fever should immediately consult a doctor, the manufacturer's advice.

Salmonella detected in fennel
After Salmonella was found in a sample of the product "organic fennel, ground", the manufacturer launched a recall campaign for all spice mixes in which the fennel was also processed. The product lines "Gut Bio" at Aldi Nord and "Bio" at Aldi Süd are affected. In the interests of preventive consumer protection, the manufacturer's respective articles have already been taken out of sale, reports Aldi Nord.

Products affected by Aldi Nord
The current recall at Aldi Nord applies to the "Gut Bio" product line, with the "Bio Ras el Hanout fine spice mix" with the best-before date17. October 2019, the "Bio Curry Madras fine spice mix" with the best-before date November 11, 2019, the "Bio Asia Wok fine spice preparation" with the best-before date March 01, 2020 and the "Bio Fennel ground" with the best-before dates October 17, 2019 and 01 March 2020 are affected. The items mentioned were sold in all Aldi Nord branches.

Products affected by Aldi Süd
At Aldi Aldi Süd, the "Bio Ras" product range includes the "Bio Ras el Hanout fine spice mix", the "Bio Curry Madras fine spice mix" and the "Bio Asia Wok fine spice mix" with the best-before date February 2020. However, the products mentioned were only offered regionally in some branches at Aldi Süd.

"Still existing packs of the mentioned articles, with the corresponding best-before date, can of course be returned to the place of purchase against reimbursement of the purchase price", so the manufacturer's note. Other types of the articles as well as other articles from Merschbrock-Wiese Gewürz GmbH are not affected by the recall. Aldi Nord emphasizes in its own message that no other items traded under the "GutBio" brand are affected either.

Risk of salmonella infection
Given the health risk that Salmonella infections (Salmonellosis) pose, the products mentioned should not be consumed under any circumstances. Because the rod-shaped bacterium causes gastrointestinal infections with symptoms such as fever, weakness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. The infection is usually over after a few days, but particularly in young children, immunocompromised and elderly people, there may be increased complaints, which in the worst case can be life-threatening. "If the above symptoms appear after consuming the product, see a doctor immediately," warns the manufacturer. (fp)
