Fipronil contamination: Manufacturer recalls various salad products after egg scandal
It had only become known a few days ago that thousands of eggs that ended up in German trade were contaminated with insecticides. Now a delicatessen manufacturer has launched a recall for several salad products that were produced using eggs contaminated with fipronil.

Eggs contaminated with fipronil
A few days ago it had become known that hundreds of thousands of eggs from Dutch production contaminated with fipronil had reached the market in North Rhine-Westphalia. Shortly afterwards it turned out that the contaminated food had also ended up in other federal states. The discounter Aldi had reacted to this and taken all the eggs from the supermarkets. Now processed products must also be recalled.

Six salad products recalled
Millions of eggs had to be withdrawn nationwide over the past week after it became known that they were contaminated with fipronil.

It is a broad-spectrum insecticide that is used against fleas, lice, ticks, cockroaches and mites, among others.

Now the manufacturer Neue Mayo Feinkost GmbH in Lübeck has recalled six salad products because of contaminated eggs.

Eggs contaminated with fipronil were used in the production of the salads, as the states and the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety said on the portal "".

Distributed in various federal states
The following are affected by the recall: Leek salad Toscana, Grandma’s jacket potato salad MHD 16.08.217, Gosch Sunday breakfast, classic egg salad MHD 18.08.2017, Hofgut egg salad MHD 16.08.2017, Hofgut tuna salad MHD 16.08.2017.

According to the information, the products were distributed in Berlin, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.

According to "", the manufacturer "initiated the withdrawal of the listed products as a preventive consumer protection measure".

Only small amounts of the insecticide detected
According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the fipronil levels found in the contaminated eggs are so low that health impairment is practically impossible.

According to a statement by the institute, "a fipronil concentration of 0.72 mg / kg (sum of fipronil and the sulfone metabolite MB46136, calculated as fipronil) in chicken eggs can be regarded as the maximum concentration at which there is no acute health risk for any of the consumer groups examined" .

According to the "Westdeutscher Rundfunk" (WDR), only a small amount (maximum 0.11 mg / kg) of the biocide was detected in the eggs delivered to NRW. With normal consumption there is therefore no health risk. (ad)
